Hemlock Mobile Android App Improvements

6

We do an annual patron satisfaction survey each year, and each year, more patrons ask for an app - the Hemlock app created by Ken Cox is a good start and we hope to roll out a PINES-branded version soon. However, there are a number of additional features that we feel would provide added benefit to patrons:

  • Hierarchical library order in dropdowns
  • Accessibility testing / tweaks
  • Log Out functionality
  • Forgot My Password functionality
  • Ability to sort search results
  • Add SMS notification option when placing holds (dependent on library settings)
  • Link library names to library hours/address info
  • Pay fines (if patron has ability to pay fines through the OPAC, it would be nice if they could do so through the app as well)
  • Access to Patron Message Center
  • Phone notifications (whenever a message is added to the patron message center, provide a phone alert - this should be able to be turned off by users who don't want those notifications)
  • Scan ISBN barcode on a non-library book and have it search the OPAC
  • Geolocation (make the app location aware and add ability to locate nearby libraries)

Re: Hemlock Mobile Android App Improvements

I am curious why patron self checkout didn't make the list.

Re: Hemlock Mobile Android App Improvements

I would love to have all this functionality in the mobile catalog, available as a web page. If we achieve that, then packaging it as an app for those who want it would be easy.

Re: Hemlock Mobile Android App Improvements

We were able to fund some of these items and it is now rolled out for PINES (1904 active installs!) and we are getting great feedback. These are the things that have been completed:

  • Hierarchical library order in dropdowns
  • Accessibility testing / tweaks
  • Log Out functionality
  • Forgot My Password functionality (links to web site form in browser)
  • Add SMS notification option when placing holds (dependent on library settings)
  • Link library names to library hours/address info (links to web site pages in browser)
  • Access to Patron Message Center (if patron has new messages, shows a msg alert with number of new messages in app - if patron clicks on it, it goes to the web page in a browser)

These are things we were not yet able to fund:

  • Ability to sort search results
  • Pay fines (if patron has ability to pay fines through the OPAC, it would be nice if they could do so through the app as well)
  • Phone notifications (whenever a message is added to the patron message center, provide a phone alert - this should be able to be turned off by users who don't want those notifications)
  • Scan ISBN barcode on a non-library book and have it search the OPAC
  • Geolocation (make the app location aware and add ability to locate nearby libraries)
