Select multiple items from search results to place holds

25

Our patrons would like to be able to select multiple items from a search results page and place holds on all of them rather than having to go through several steps for each one.

(Also - place them on a list as in http://masslnc.org/node/3132, and also print the selected ones or export them as a CSV)

Re: Select multiple items from search results to place holds

I'm in favour of this idea, but would like this feature to be enabled only when viewing the catalog with "Show More Details" (without which one doesn't always have enough information to tell what format one is requesting). My mistake—what information shows is configuarable, so there is no need for this restriction.

Re: Select multiple items from search results to place holds

Ours shows the format name & icon on the regular search results screen without having to click on Show More Details.

Re: Select multiple items from search results to place holds

Apparently ours now has all the necessary information as well! It didn't used to, and I didn't notice/forgot that it had been improved!

Just a note to the admins of this site—my comment contains struck out text which renders fine in the preview, but the markup is being filtered out here!

Also, comment threading appears to be broken.

Hi Benjamin,

We removed the comment threading from the site a while back. We found that in several discussions, the threading lead to confusion, and, after discussing it with the development committee, we decided it would be more straightforward to list the comments in the order that they were added.

I will investigate your issue with the strikethrough text.

Just to be clear, patrons can currently add several titles individually to a list (even before they are logged in) and then view the list and place a hold on all of them.  (Of course they are asked to log in after they select place a hold. )  So they don't currently need to go through all the steps for each hold.  In recent training sessions, we found that this was one of the least-known handy tricks.

But I know the main point of your post is that we want to be able to use checkboxes to select the records, not have to take an action on each one.  That's so common on shopping sites that people expect it.  I would like the checkbox options on this screenshot from OverDrive Marketplace -- in addition to checkboxes for each title, we can select all the items on that page, or all the items in the search results: https://goo.gl/z9tNIy

Thanks Elizabeth, I wasn't aware of that list trick!

But yes, the checkbox approach is what I think would make the most sense to both patrons and staff.

I'm moving this idea to planned development as a result of the December 15, 2016 vote on the MassLNC Development Committee. MassLNC will begin writing up requirements for this project so that the project can be issued for quotes from potential developers. Moving this idea to the planned section does not mean we will definitely fund the project. The final decision will be based on the quotes we receive and the funds we have available for projects.

Sorry for the delay on getting the draft requirements posted for this project. The requirements are based on preliminary discussion with the public catalog working group, follow-up e-mail discussion, and a meeting with Equinox where we reviewed several projects we are planning to pursue. The requirements are available for feedback at http://masslnc.org/node/3304 with a set of mock-ups available at http://masslnc.org/node/3313.

The project is broken down into three separate sections that will be quoted separately:

- the ability to perform actions on a batch of items selected from the search results page. We don't change any behavior in the actions that are performed. As items are selected, they are added to a 'cart' that performs the same functions as a temporary list. The actions can be performed directly from the search results page or from the cart itself. The actions are also made available from lists, if they are not available there already.

- changes to the information that is included when printing/emailing records. This project allows Evergreen sites to customize which fields are included and also allows for the inclusion of call numbers, copy locations, etc. in the printout / email.

- the ability to print and email in a standard citation style, such as APA and MLA. If you have any feedback or suggested improvements, please post comments here. Thank you!

We have signed a contract with Equinox to develop technical specifications for this project.
