Problem linking from patron holds to catalog for items we don't own

4

I encounter this situation regularly, but a recent experience is a good example of this problem.  A patron called to check her position in a hold queue, so I went into her account holds screen.  From there I was able to tell her she was #1 on the list, but she said when she placed the hold there were three copies and wanted to know why her hold hadn't been filled yet.

So, to see what was going on with the other copies, I right-clicked the item and clicked Show in Catalog.  It just so happens that MCD doesn't own any items attached to this bib, and when that happens, no holdings at all show on the item details screen - nor is there any link or anything to get to see holdings.

When I encounter this, the only thing I know to do is perform a new search for the title, and change the Library to MVLC.  Is there a way that the Show in Catalog link will always just show the holdings, even if my library doesn't own any copies?  Or, if the link to the catalog always carries the search scope along, can there at least be a link where the holdings should be to display all system holdings?

Attached are some screenshots, although I've had no trouble repeating this - it should work in any case where the library you're logged in as doesn't own a copy of the item you're linking to.  Thanks.

If there were available copies on that record, then there would be a link to view all available copies. One of the suggestions I've heard is for that link to appear for all copies or for an additional link to appear to view all copies. I guess we just need to find a good place to put it. I don't think it would be too difficult for somebody at MassLNC to do that code.

Oops - sorry! If it wasn't obvious, that last comment came from me. I forgot that I was logged in under another account.

I also find this frustrating.

Re: Problem linking from patron holds to catalog for items ...

Kathy, that makes sense.  Maybe limiting to available copies is part of a larger problem for that section.  This came up when we first switched to the TPAC, and I've seen patrons do the same thing since - they skip right over the "Available Copies" section heading, and read (or mis-read) the "4 copies at Merrimack Valley Library Consortium" or whatever as MVLC has 4 copies total.

I don't know how likely this might be, but a possible solution would be to rework the "Available Copies" section into a more general "Total Copies" section that more accurately reflects everything, available and otherwise.  That way, the problem I reported here would be eliminated.

The "7 of 10 copies available at Merrimack Valley Library Consortium" language convention seems to work okay, just like what is shown on the search results page.  And that way we could always include a logical "Show" link at each applicable level to navigate around.

A thousand times yes! Thank you for articulating this. It comes up daily, and is indeed frustrating.

I've done a tweak to the record summary page that 1) changes the display a bit to a "x of y available" count and 2) keeps the show link as long as there is at least one copy owned by that particular org unit, even if those copies are unavailable.

You can see the new display at https://mlnc1.mvlcstaff.org. Searching harry potter will bring you to a record where there are no available copies. The code will not live on the system forever, but I'll keep it up there through the end of 8/14/15. I will also submit this code for inclusion in the core Evergreen software.

Re: Problem linking from patron holds to catalog for items ...

Thanks Kathy.  I'm sorry I'm just now getting to this, but it looks like the example patrons have returned all eight copies - as of right now, all eight are available, and the display looks pretty much like the regular MVLC catalog.

Sorry Brian! I linked to the wrong address. Unfortunately, I need to use this server to test code for the 2.9 release, but, in the meantime, I'll add a screenshot of the display. I'll load the code again once the beta release is finalized. Screenshot is below.

An updated link to a server with a title that has all copies unavailable:

This code was merged into Evergreen, so I'm moving this idea into the Completed Projects tab.

Thanks everyone!
