Editing patron type should not automatically renew the patron's account for two years.

Not sure what the logic of this feature is. There are many times when I edit patron info without wanting to renew the account.

Should you be given the option, "Would you like to renew this account for two years?" with a yes and no button? Or should it just change the type and leave the expiration date unchanged?

The former might be sensible if you very often do want to renew the card. Otherwise, I think the latter option would be prefered.

Some sort of option for renewing accounts for two years from the present date would be excellent. It could save some keystrokes, plus encourage librarians to stick with the CWMARS-mandated two-year renewal instead of three or five years (which some libraries seem to prefer).

Ooh. Maybe system configurable buttons with extension periods. So C/W MARS could have a button in the editor, right next to the expiration date, that would say + 2 years

but other systems might have + 3 years or + 6 months or whatever matched their policy.

Perhaps this should be a development idea on it's own...

I just wanted to clarify that the changing of the expiration date occurs when permission groups are changed but not other edits to the record.

Re: Editing patron type should not automatically renew the ...

Which is probably a good argument against this change happening silently. It would be all too easy to change the expiration date in this way and not even know you had done it.

(By the way Patron Type = Permission Group, at least for those of us who came from using Millenium. The older term is more familiar to most of us.)

A button to update the patron's expiration date is introduced in Release 2.6. Here's a link to the release notes with more information:

Good catch! Interesting that they write "A button is used here so that the updating of the expire date remains an intentional process, not one that happens upon any edit." and yet in the same entry they say that it is also updated when the profile group is changed. This seems contradictory because, as Chris pointed out, just because it is appropriate to change the permission group does not in any way imply that the requirements for renew the account have been met.
