Button to switch catalog scope

22

Patrons and librarians frequently need to change the search scope, and the vast majority of the time they are switching between their default scope and the top-level (all libraries) scope. A button that provided an easy means to do this would be very helpful.

My proposal:

  • Whenever the scope is set to something other than top-level we should have a button that will quickly change the scope set in the selection list to top-level. (The user would still have to submit the search as usual.)
  • If the scope is set to top-level and a default scope is set and is other than top-level, we should have a button to quickly change the scope set in the selection list to the default. (The user would still have to submit the search as usual.)

I've attached two images showing how this might look. (Though I'm sure someone else could do better.)

Re: Button to switch catalog scope

I'm adding a link to a similar idea that was just submitted with a different approach to quickly changing search scopes. http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/3105.

I've put the other idea in the attic, so please add any more discussion on the topic to this idea.

Thanks all!

Dan Pearl at C/W MARS is currently working on code for this idea. I'll wait until the code has been submitted and added to Evergreen before moving this idea to the attic.
