Autofill permission group and home library based on zip code and other information

15
When registering a patron or updating an expired card, there are two areas where staff commonly make mistakes: Main Permission Group and Home Library field. In the address field, typing in the Zip Code automatically fills in the town, county, state and country.

Couldn't we have something similiar for the Main Permission Group? When type in the patron's Date of Birth the Main Permission Group is automatically filled in? For Home Library, couldn't that also be based on the Zip Code?

I'm not sure how easy this would be to implement but it is a idea that came from our member libraries.  I can see a lot of issue where it might be difficult to manage.

This would be very helpful if it could be implemented.

Just a note that we would need to make this optional. Different networks have different policies regarding the use of the Home Library field. In some networks, it's tied to the patron's place of residence. In other networks, it's tied to the library where they registered. The permission group could be tricky since all permission groups are not based on age (e.g. student, faculty). Maybe it would work best as a library setting so that it doesn't impact the academics.

I think this would be fine for cities or towns that had a single zip code.

In C/W MARS, though, we have cities that encompass many (or multiple) zipcodes. Libraries in these cities might want to opt out of using a feature like this.

If we have this feature, I think libraries should have the choice, on an individual basis, to use it or not.

This is not something we would be likely to use, since we don't assign either home library or permission group based on residency.  I do think we should always be looking for autofill opportunities, though!

I agree, this would be a very beneficial process to set up, and that it should be optional. In regards to C/WMARS I'd be curious to know how it would impact cities with multiple zip codes? Since its confusing to have a patron outside that 'city' apply for a card in another town.  Staff at other libraries that follow the address most likely for convenience, connect the patrons home library to the main branch of that city anyway.
