MassLNC August Update

Development projects

As the Evergreen community is approaching the deadline for new features to be submitted for the 2.5 release, MassLNC has seen several sponsored development projects merged into Evergreen.

Many members of MassLNC networks will be happy to see that the alphabetical browse search, sponsored by MassLNC and Bibliomation, was merged into the development version of Evergreen earlier this month and will be available in 2.5. MassLNC contracted with Equinox Software to perform this work. Alphabetical browsing will be available for title, author, subject and series. Support for See and See Also references will also be available.

MassLNC also contracted with Dan Scott of Coffee | Code Consulting for a development project that will allow the library name in the copy details section of the bib record to link to a library web page. This development project was a result of last fall's MassLNC development ideas process (see original idea). This code was merged into Evergreen last month and will also be available in 2.5.

The other project that came out of last fall's development ideas process was the MassLNC billing project. MassLNC contracted with Jason Stephenson to complete work for Bill-01 to Bill-04 and with Equinox Software to complete work for Bill-05 and Bill-06. Equinox has completed most of its coding, and MassLNC is now getting ready to test the code.

Performance Evaluation

MassLNC has contracted with OmniTI to perform a software performance evaluation of Evergreen. OmniTI has already begun work by evaluating the database logs for the three MassLNC networks. MVLC is setting up a test server for the evaluation. Once the test server is ready, the evaluation can begin in earnest. The goal of the evaluation is to identify bottlenecks in the system that negatively impact performance.

The performance evaluation is funded through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant, administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC).

Mobile Catalog

MassLNC held a meeting with library and network staff this afternoon to discuss current community development efforts to create a mobile-friendly catalog. The group also discussed what MassLNC would like see in a mobile catalog. We invite library staff to participate in a discussion in the MassLNC OPAC forum where people can share examples of web sites that work well on mobile devices. You will need to be logged into your MassLNC account to post comments in the forum.
