Allow item records to be sorted by chosen columns

12

Item records should be sorted sensibly in the staff client. It might be best to let users sort by columns of their own choice. If we were to stick with a single sorting I would recommend first owning library, then call number, then part. This sorting should handle numbers intelligently so that 9 appears before, not after, 10.

Just a note that the current expected behavior is for the items to sort by library name (with preferred library displaying at the top, with remaining libraries sorting alphabetically) and then by call number. In the event of matching libraries and call numbers, copies that are more available (e.g. available, in reshelving) will display ahead of copies that are less available (e.g. checked out.)

Parts are not part of the sorting mechanism, nor are call number prefixes or suffixes. Should we be considering the prefixes and suffixes in this request?

First, this request is just as necessary in the OPAC as in the staff client.

Parts should definitely be taken into account in the sorting, and this should take priority over availablity, which should only be used for tie breaking. I'm uncertain about whether prefixes or suffixes need to be taken into account, but I suspect that ignorning them would be confusing, since to most folks they are just part of the call number.

Here's my preferred order:

---

Library Name

Copy Location

Call Number Prefix

Call Number

Call Number Suffix

Part

---

In other words, left to right!

If you look at a record where lots of libraries have lot of copies in lots of places, you can libraries with lots of copies with the same call numbers, some on the shelf, some in the location Storage:
