Right-click functionality

9

We should remove unnecessary menus and make them accessible by right click. I'm surprised we can't right-click to do anything right now. Menus such as "actions for this item" or "actions for catalogers" could be hidden, and pop-up only when the user right-clicks. It will simplify the UI and most people are in the habit of right-clicking to get extra menus anyway. Obviously, the right-click menu should include cut copy and paste as well.

Re: Right-click functionality

In my experience, most of these actions are available through contextual menus brought up by right clicking. Certainly, on the the item status screen, right clicking brings up exactly the same menu as clicking on "Actions for selected items". (There are a few items under "Actions for catalogers" that are missing, however, which brings up the interesting question of why there are two menus with so many duplicate items anyways.)

If there are places where this kind of right click functionality is missing, I agree that it should be added. Can you point to specific places in this software where the contextual menus are missing or inadequate?

As for removing the "extra menus", leaving only the contextual menus, I think this is a bad idea. Traditional menus are very helpful, espeasially for those new to the software, because they advertise what options are available. Many of the menus in Evergreen could benefit from better names and organization, but I would hate to see them replaced entirely by contextual menus which are invisible to everyone except those who already know they are there.

Re: Right-click functionality

I think I would mostly just like more right click functionality instead of getting rid of any pre-existing menus really.

My impression is that right-click functionality is already pretty widespread in the EG client, although I agree that if there are specific places where its missing, we should delinieate those and see what can be done. Even more, I agree that there's a lot of duplication of menus, probably due to the fact the the staff client has really grown organically over the years rather than being designed holistically from a user-oriented perspective. I would certainly like to see the option to hide or remove menu options that you know are never going to be used in your installation, and the ability to order the menu options in a way that makes sense for you. Although, that's probably something that would be better controlled at the consortium level, in order to better standarize training across many libraries.

Re: Right-click functionality

The main thing I would like to see available using right-click is the ability to cut/copy/paste.  I like having keystroke options for a lot of things, but since I'm already using the mouse to highlight text, I'd like to be able to use it for cut/copy/paste as well.  I already use right-click in place of a lot of the menus, but having the 2 menus in Item Status is awkward as right-click does not bring up the Actions for Catalogers menu, which is usually the one I need.  I agree that one combined menu would be better, with options grayed out if that login does not have the appropriate permission.

Re: Right-click functionality

Yes! Most of the items in the two menus duplicate each other anyways, which I have always found confusing. Why not one single menu that only shows sensible options in a sensible order? (Irrelevant options could be hidden based on the users login).

Re: Right-click functionality

One place I would find a right-click menu very helpful is in the catalog within the staff client.  Being able to right-click on a title in a list of search results so that I could open that item details page in a new tab would save a lot of having to keep reloading the same search results page.

But really, normal right-click functionality throughout the entire client catalog would be great - not being able to right-click to paste something into the search box (or copy something out of it) is a pain.

This doesn't help add an additional context menu, but there currently is code to allow staff to CTRL-click a search results link to open the record details page. https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1028649. I'll try to set aside time in the next few weeks to test it so that it can be added to Evergreen.

Re: Right-click functionality

Another helpful place to enable right-click is on the "home" screen of the staff client, so we could right-click into the search box to paste in a title or author.  Actually, in this location, a "paste and go" option would also be great.

Re: Right-click functionality

I would still probably use ctrl-v, but I think this would be great all the same.

Re: Right-click functionality

Nearly all of these issues are resolved in the web client, which allows built-in browser functionality for selection, copy & paste, right-click to open new tabs, etc. There are also certain places in the web client (such as search results tables) that allow access to specific Evergreen actions as well.

I'm going to flag this for the attic.
