Authorities Linking

Currrently, you have to run an authority linking to connect the authorities file to the bib record on the appropriate line.  One of the issues we have is that when a record is brought in via z39.50 it overlays the existing record wiping the links to the authority file.   This can also happen throught the vandelay load.  We need an efficient way that does not impact system performance to recreate those links.  Unfortunately, for C/W MARS it takes an extremely long time (probably a couple of weeks if we ran the linking continuously to link all the records).

Re: Authorities Linking

I'm giving this a +1 even though I don't know much about how this works, simply because I believe that authority data and the ability to use it is one of the most valuable tools we can offer in the library catalog. Anything that makes this more difficult than it needs to be should be fixed.

Am I understanding correctly that we can't just choose a single bib & request for that record to have its headings run against the authority records?  In OCLC's Connexion software, when in a bib record, you can "authorize headings" and have them link; perhaps we can have similar functionality.  It still wouldn't solve the import issue, but, perhaps if we could create an "on demand" option, that could then be integrated into batch loads.

Just a note that subsequent runs of the linking script should not take as long. There is a days_back flag you can use to re-apply links to newly created or edited records. Also see Jason's blog post http://blog.mvlcstaff.org/2012/09/howto-batch-authority-control.html on running the script in parallel to make the process go more quickly.

I still want to look into that issue where imports are overlaying existing links to the authority record. I'll report back here.

Re: Authorities Linking

When I overlay a record with authority links using z39.50, I copy the subfield zero to the OCLC record in MARC Editor before I overlay.  It takes a little more time, but the authority link doesn't get wiped out.
