Patron search form.

Currently the form retains the last search info, if you haven't closed it completely.  If you're looking up several people in a row, it would be nice if the form would clear itself.  I didn't even realize there was a "clear form" button at the bottom until recently.  Thanks.

I must have missed this idea when it was first posted, but yes, it drives me nuts too. I'm assuming that the current behavior exists because some system somewhere prefers it that way, but it would be nice to have it changed to be a setting at either the consortium or library level so that you could choose what happens when you click the "Search Form" button. It should be a choice of either:

1. The current behavior - Return to the search form, showing the previous search terms, with the "Clear Form" button available (and perhaps more obvious).

2. Return to the search form, clearing all previous search terms.

This prompts me to remember, though, that there are actually a number of places in Evergreen where there are inconsistencies in what happens if you go back to a place where data was entered into a search box, such as the catalog, and various places where you type or key in barcodes. In some cases, the data disappears when you go back, in others it stays, or it stays and you can edit it, or it stays and you can't edit it, and in the catalog, it stays with the added search syntax included into the search box, making it harder to start a new search. Maybe we should go through and systematically document some of this, although by "we" I realize I'm essentially setting myself up for that to be "me"!

Thanks, Jeff!  We all appreciate the fact that you volunteered to do this!

One example: When you choose a template to start a new report, the report form will show the previous title from the session, which you can edit.  (You pretty much have to edit it, since the report names must be unique.)  I have never been able to decide if this is a bug or a feature -- I guess it could be useful if you were running a bunch of reports whose names all started with "FY 2014 Count of..." or something like that, but it annoys me and adds a little confusion during reports training.

Re: Patron search form.

I agree with this suggestion too, but would also like to expand a bit on the "I didn't even realize there was a 'clear form' button at the bottom until recently" line.

Another enhancement I would love is to make the "Search" and "Clear Form" buttons at the bottom of the screen more visible.  Most of our screens look like this:

The left pane only needs to be wide enough to type in data, leaving the right pane as large as possible so the columns can be read easily.  But at this width, the labels for both buttons are hidden - is it possible to move the buttons to the left, into the empty space under "Filter by Permissions Profile," so they span both columns and are visibile without scrolling and without shrinking the right pane?

I know other libraries might prefer different pane widths, but moving the buttons to the left wouldn't negatively affect anyone, just make the buttons more visible overall.

I also wasn't sure if this should be a separate ticket or fit under the "Patron search form" heading - hopefully it's a minor code adjustment and if work is done in one area of the form, this could be done as well.  Thanks.

Brian - Have you guys tried using the horizontal interface at all? We, along with a number of other NOBLE members have opted to switch from the vertical pane orientation to the horizontal one, and most of the staff seem to prefer it. I know I do. That said, I think there's actually a lot of design work that could be done to overhaul the patron record screens in general. But it might solve your button visibility dilemma. (BVD?)

Re: Patron search form.

Wow Jeff, I had never heard of the horizontal interface before and had no idea it existed.  I found it in the 2.4 documentation (page 352 in the PDF at http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/), and I can see why NOBLE staff might like it.  It looks like a library setting though, so I'll talk to people here to see what they think.  Thanks for pointing it out.

Brian - We've had it since 2.2, and it is a library setting, so some have opted for it and others have not. We did discover a bug (or a feature, depending on how you look at it) where if you switch to the horizontal display for your library, you'll still get the vertical one if you access the patron search form from the portal page. You get the horizontal one if you access it from the toolbar. So I suppose if your staff is divided, you could just have the vertical people use the portal, and the horizonatal people use the toolbar.

Update: In the web client the Search & Clear buttons are much more prominent.
