Ability to create and edit Item Templates without having to be in an actual item record

10

There has been some work on this and item templates will soon be available through Admin < Local Admin < Item Attribute Editor. However, you will only be able to add copy-level data to these templates. This enhancement is to allow classification scheme and call number affixes to be added to a template here too.

This idea is ported over from the Google moderator account where MassLNC had previously been tracking some development ideas.

This would be fantastic! It is very inconvenient & confusing to have to open or add an item just to be able to edit a template.  I would click the thumbs up 100 times if I could!

I want to see this as part of a true template management system that would let a supervisor add, edit and delete templates for their library, and to assign them by workstation and/or user.  No more exporting/importing!

Re: Ability to create and edit Item Templates without having ...

As a note on this: Accomplishing this would likely require moving the templates off of workstations and into the database. Doable, granted, but not likely to have user or workstation-level granularity. More likely to be done at the OU level than at user. It may be possible to do this with a "load templates from two sources" bit, though that wouldn't allow a supervisor to delete locally defined templates.

It might even be easier to make this function if done by having the supervisor create them as local templates and then providing a method for moving the local templates to the server.

I don't know when it showed up, but as of Nov. 8, I was able to access the "Item Attribute Editor" from the Admin --> Local Administration menu.  This is indeed the copy template editor.  A quick edit of an existing template worked just fine.

It does not include volume/call number as part of the template, but I'm pleased just to be able to edit the copy information.

Can we rename this to:  "Include volume information (i.e., call number) in item attribute templates"?

Perhaps. Or maybe we can merge this idea along with http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/2651 and maybe a piece of http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/2845 into one idea on an improved template management system.

I agree that this is part of an improved template management system. It's important for templates to include classification type and (often) prefixes and/or suffixes to help keep data consistent for reports and other purposes.

I am moving this idea to the attic because the volume / copy template editor available from Local Admin in the web client will allow users to create templates for both volume and copy information without being in the record.
