Bib record flag to require attached items to have a part assigned.

6

Currently, you can have items that are assigned parts and items without parts attached to the same bib.  This can lead to holds issues with mulitiple queues forming depending on whether patrons choose a part or just place a title hold.  If even a single item has no part assigned, patrons can then place a title hold, resulting in situations where that single item is trying to fill a long list of title holds, while items with parts assigned are sitting on library shelves.  It's also very easy to forget to assign a part - on some older monitors, the parts dropdown is beyond the edge of the screen.

I would like to see a checkbox or dropdown field on the bib (not the items) that basically says:

items on this bib must have a part assigned
items on this bib must not have a part assigned
items on this bib may have parts assigned, but it is not required

This would prevent the accidental omission of parts assignments, and alleviate the headaches MVLC is dealing with with multi-part DVD sets and holds.

I don't think this functionality is as much of an issue for the remaining MassLNC partners since their policy is to allow of mix of part and non-part materials on the same bib record. Therefore, I'm moving this idea to the attic.

I'm compiling the CWMARS highest ranked cataloging development ideas this week and the highest ranking here so far is the ability to have customized parts order. Parts and how they are used are very important for this network. I'd like to see the bib record flag development to make sure parts are added for serial records.

If the record has bib level 's' for serial the prompt should be there to force libraries to add the part. Every serial record requires parts. So should every record for a multi-volume set or open entry one for graphic novels. The latter two have bib level 'm' for monograph so the system needs to find something else for the flag.

OK, Janet, thanks for providing some other use cases for this development. I'll move this one back in the Sandbox.

Oh, yes, this would be wonderful! There are, of course, cases where a title hold meaning "all parts" makes sense, but there are so many cases where it doesn't. No one is circulating a 50 volume magna series as a single item!
