Add permalink widget to all OPAC search results pages

6

Each OPAC record and search result page should have, at the least, a clearly labeled link to the permalink for that page. Even better would be a permalink widget which makes it easy to see and copy the permalink, and provides an explanation of it's purpose for those not familiar with the terminology. (WorldCat and Novelist both have widgets of this type.) Read more »

Add "Move to.." functionality to My Lists in OPAC

Tags:
1

Currently, after a patron logs into the OPAC and opens one of her lists under My Lists, there are two choices in the "actions for these items" drop down list: "place hold" and "remove from list".

Sometimes patrons with multiple lists want to move items directly from one list to another.

The suggestion is to add "Move to.." as a choice in the dropdown and allow direct movement of items from one list to another.

Browse hold shelf improvement

12

I suggest that when we choose Browse Hold Shelf we be given the option of choosing, before it starts listing everything on the hold shelf,  whether we want that or only the items due to be cleared.

Establish a consistent interface in the Evergreen staff client

5

I think Evergreen needs to be consistent throughout, about where it places function buttons such as "Print", "Modify", etc.. This could be done by creating what I call a style sheet, not to be confused with CSS, with which developers need to conform if they want their submissions accepted. It's a very long term project, but why not do something like set up a committee to work out a draft to be submitted to the larger community for approval. I know a consistent interface would make my job easier.

Change the way search results are prioritized

3

Right now, results in a pac search are prioritized according to record density...Record density = the ratio of the keywords searched to the overall number of words in a record. One keyword appearing in a record of 100 words has a higher density than the same keyword appearing in a record of 200 words. Read more »

Improve the way browse search matches up headings

25

When you do a browse search, the system displays a list of headings with the number of records for each.  The rules that it uses to match up headings for this display are quite strict, and include differences in case, spacing and punctuation.  If the system ignored these small differences when matching, it would result in a more concise and more useful display.

The only difference in these two titles is the space before the colon Read more »

Improve display for browse search results with no matches

34

If the user enters a browse search that doesn't match any headings in the index, the system now shows the alphabetical neighborhood of the words that were entered, with the closest match highlighted.

It may not be clear to the user why we think that entry is a match, and we want the system to display a message like "Your title would be here" in the list.

Add "Items per Page" section to search results

8

I think this has been brought up before, but I couldn't find the previous idea.

I know patrons can set in their account how many items they'd like to appear on their search results page, but a patron asked that we also add this functionality to the non-logged-in search results page. Read more »

Check for Existing Holdings when adding a copy

2

I was wondering if it would be possible to have some kind of alert on a marc record that would show that you already have an item attached to that record. Right now, you have to go to Holdings Maintenance to check, an extra step.

The alert could be similar to OCLC which says your library already has a copy of this, maybe something in red in the record summary bar.

Unified editor shouldn't always delete volumes

Tags:
6

If you create an "on order" record with a temporary call number and then, upon receiving the item, replace the call number, Evergreen will delete the previous call number record and create a new one rather than just update the existing call number record. This behavior only occurs for catalogers using the unified volume/copy editor (used by a majority of catalogers in the MassLNC networks). If there are any volume-level holds on that first call numbers, those holds will then automatically cancel. Read more »

Allow items with parts to be transferred to other bib records

Tags:
4

Evergreen has a bug that creates a messy situation when copies with parts are transferred to another bib record. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/904472.

We need to fix this bug to allow people to transfer part items from one bib record to another.

Better handling for situations where parts with holds are deleted

Tags:

If you delete a part that has a hold(s) on it, any holds interfaces that display the hold will pop up a Network Failure message. There have been several options discussed in the community to improve this situation - see https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/937789Read more »

Eliminate filters from advanced search box

Tags:
18

When doing an advanced search with certain limiters, the limiters appear in the search box on the search results screen. Not only does it look ugly, but, if users don't notice the advanced search limiters, they may unknowingly apply the limiters in subsequent searches.

The reason it keeps the limiters here is because most advanced search limiters do not display on the search results page if you want to re-execute the same search. However, we need a more elegant way to handle these limiters.

Allow patrons to save Sort setting in their online account

Tags:
10

I feel like this was available at one point, but I don't see it now.  A patron does not like the "Relevance" sort setting, and would like her searches to always sort by pub date newest to oldest when she's logged in.  Is that a setting that can be added, letting patrons choose their default sort setting, along with preferred search location and pickup library?  Thanks.

Automatic notification of orphaned holds

39

Patrons should be notified if a hold becomes orphaned, i.e. there are no longer any items on the record which could someday fill the hold. A hold can be orphaned when items on the record are marked as lost, missing, reference, or any other non-holdable status, as well as when items are deleted.

Frequent library users may not want to receive notifications for holds that are ready, but may still want to be notified of orphaned holds, so it should be possible to subscribe to this type of notification but not the other. Read more »

Ability to sort or limit search results and holdings by distance

15

You should be able to to sort your search results by the distance to the nearest available copy.

You should be able to sort the holdings on a record by distance. (You should also be able to hide unavailable copies, but this is a seperate development idea http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/2844)

Both of these would require that the user input their location. At the least, you should be able to provide a zip code. Optional geolocation might also be considered. Read more »
