Unified editor shouldn't always delete volumes

Tags:
6

If you create an "on order" record with a temporary call number and then, upon receiving the item, replace the call number, Evergreen will delete the previous call number record and create a new one rather than just update the existing call number record. This behavior only occurs for catalogers using the unified volume/copy editor (used by a majority of catalogers in the MassLNC networks). If there are any volume-level holds on that first call numbers, those holds will then automatically cancel. Read more »

Fix problems with display of EDI and Funding Sources interfaces

Allow items with parts to be transferred to other bib records

Tags:
4

Evergreen has a bug that creates a messy situation when copies with parts are transferred to another bib record. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/904472.

We need to fix this bug to allow people to transfer part items from one bib record to another.

Better handling for situations where parts with holds are deleted

Tags:

If you delete a part that has a hold(s) on it, any holds interfaces that display the hold will pop up a Network Failure message. There have been several options discussed in the community to improve this situation - see https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/937789Read more »

Eliminate filters from advanced search box

Tags:
17

When doing an advanced search with certain limiters, the limiters appear in the search box on the search results screen. Not only does it look ugly, but, if users don't notice the advanced search limiters, they may unknowingly apply the limiters in subsequent searches.

The reason it keeps the limiters here is because most advanced search limiters do not display on the search results page if you want to re-execute the same search. However, we need a more elegant way to handle these limiters.

Allow patrons to save Sort setting in their online account

Tags:
9

I feel like this was available at one point, but I don't see it now.  A patron does not like the "Relevance" sort setting, and would like her searches to always sort by pub date newest to oldest when she's logged in.  Is that a setting that can be added, letting patrons choose their default sort setting, along with preferred search location and pickup library?  Thanks.

Automatic notification of orphaned holds

22

Patrons should be notified if a hold becomes orphaned, i.e. there are no longer any items on the record which could someday fill the hold. A hold can be orphaned when items on the record are marked as lost, missing, reference, or any other non-holdable status, as well as when items are deleted.

Frequent library users may not want to receive notifications for holds that are ready, but may still want to be notified of orphaned holds, so it should be possible to subscribe to this type of notification but not the other. Read more »

Ability to sort or limit search results and holdings by distance

12

You should be able to to sort your search results by the distance to the nearest available copy.

You should be able to sort the holdings on a record by distance. (You should also be able to hide unavailable copies, but this is a seperate development idea http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/2844)

Both of these would require that the user input their location. At the least, you should be able to provide a zip code. Optional geolocation might also be considered. Read more »

Improve main title searches

12

Many materials have a subtitle but are known by the main title alone. So, for example, most folks will ask for Scattered when they want Scattered : how attention deficit disorder originates and what you can do about it  and will ask for Exit A when they want Exit A : a novel. If these haven't been cataloged with the main title (by which I mean everything before the colon) added as an alternative title, then they will not show up when searching for a title that "matches exactly", i.e. Read more »

Editing patron type should not automatically renew the patron's account for two years.

Not sure what the logic of this feature is. There are many times when I edit patron info without wanting to renew the account.

Improve Vandelay Performance

I would like to be able to load a larger number of records through Vandelay and also significantly increase the speed in which things load.   Central site staff are spending a lot of time loading records.

Carry through and display search settings on screens in the hold process

When I'm searching the catalog - say for the summer reading book Wonder - I'll set Type=Title, Format=All Books, Library=Chelmsford Main in the basic search boxes.  Of course they're all checked out, so I'll place the patron on hold for it. Read more »

Patron name searches in the staff client should be punctuation-insensitive

35

The current punctuation-sensitive setup is not desirable in any way that I can think of. Lots of false failed searches when library staff search OBRIEN instead of O'BRIEN, SMITH-JONES instead of SMITHJONES, or vice versa. And lots of duplicate accounts as a result.frown Read more »

Display "Current holds" information on Place Hold screen

Tags:

Right now in the catalog, the "Current holds" information (the "3 current holds with 16 total copies" line) I think only appears on the Item Details page.  However, at the Reference Desk when I'm helping a patron find a specific book (like Divergent, The Fault in our Stars, etc), nine times out of then I never go to that page. Holds Target Automatically in Check In without the Use of Checkin Modifiers

3

For newly added items to capture Holds, it is necessary for staff to use the Checkin Modifier Retarget Local Holds.  This is because the item did not exist in the system at the time the Hold was placed and the new item is checked into the system before the 24 hour retargeting of Holds has occurred.  This step should not be necessary.  When an eligible item is checked into Evergreen the system should check of any and all Holds that this item may fill and capture appropriately. Add item barcode and other item specific numbers to keyword index

15

In order to streamline staff work flows, it would be very helpful to add item barcodes, item call numbers, and other item level identifiers to the keyword index. This would allow library staff to search for a record by these numbers without having to navigate to the number search tab.

Improve "limit to fiction" and "limit to nonfiction" options to the catalog.

"Limit to fiction" and "Limit to nonfiction" options would be a welcome addition to the catalog.

I've provided a mockup in which a select menu is present next to the "limit to available" option in the search results. The select options are "Show both fiction and nonfiction", "Limit to fiction", and "Limit to nonfiction". Read more »
