Allow Accelerated Reader searching by range

6

It would be nice to be able to do a search by Accelerated Reader ranges (Accelerated Reader shows up in MARC 526a, the range in 526c). An example search would be for Accelerated Reader 2.4 through 3.2 for dinosaurs. The library that brought this up to me said this was a feature of the Follett system used in the Newton School Catalog. From the screenshot I saw, the feature is in Follett Destiny.

display money owed by breaking down fines vs. repalcement cost

32

I'd like the top of the screen where "bills" are displayed on patron record to say FINES: 5.00, BILLED ITEMS:  30.00, MANUALLY PLACED FINES: 3.00 so it is clearer for staff to see what's going on right away.  Read more »

Permission checkpoint is needed for editing due dates of non-owned items

7

For consortia with circulation policies based on the library that owns the item, there needs to be a way to set permissions such that users cannot edit due dates on items owned by other libraries in the consortium.

Allow a "quick-request" option for placing holds

21

I know this is definitely a nice-to-have wishlist type item, but a patron asked for it and it seemed useful.  The patron wanted to be able to select which parts (in his case, of DVD television series) to request right from the search results screen, instead of having to click through multiple pages.

Add permalink widget to all OPAC search results pages

5

Each OPAC record and search result page should have, at the least, a clearly labeled link to the permalink for that page. Even better would be a permalink widget which makes it easy to see and copy the permalink, and provides an explanation of it's purpose for those not familiar with the terminology. (WorldCat and Novelist both have widgets of this type.) Read more »

Browse hold shelf improvement

11

I suggest that when we choose Browse Hold Shelf we be given the option of choosing, before it starts listing everything on the hold shelf,  whether we want that or only the items due to be cleared.

Improve the way browse search matches up headings

24

When you do a browse search, the system displays a list of headings with the number of records for each.  The rules that it uses to match up headings for this display are quite strict, and include differences in case, spacing and punctuation.  If the system ignored these small differences when matching, it would result in a more concise and more useful display.

The only difference in these two titles is the space before the colon Read more »

Improve display for browse search results with no matches

30

If the user enters a browse search that doesn't match any headings in the index, the system now shows the alphabetical neighborhood of the words that were entered, with the closest match highlighted.

It may not be clear to the user why we think that entry is a match, and we want the system to display a message like "Your title would be here" in the list.

Add "Items per Page" section to search results

7

I think this has been brought up before, but I couldn't find the previous idea.

I know patrons can set in their account how many items they'd like to appear on their search results page, but a patron asked that we also add this functionality to the non-logged-in search results page. Read more »

Allow patrons to save Sort setting in their online account

Tags:
9

I feel like this was available at one point, but I don't see it now.  A patron does not like the "Relevance" sort setting, and would like her searches to always sort by pub date newest to oldest when she's logged in.  Is that a setting that can be added, letting patrons choose their default sort setting, along with preferred search location and pickup library?  Thanks.

Automatic notification of orphaned holds

33

Patrons should be notified if a hold becomes orphaned, i.e. there are no longer any items on the record which could someday fill the hold. A hold can be orphaned when items on the record are marked as lost, missing, reference, or any other non-holdable status, as well as when items are deleted.

Frequent library users may not want to receive notifications for holds that are ready, but may still want to be notified of orphaned holds, so it should be possible to subscribe to this type of notification but not the other. Read more »

Ability to sort or limit search results and holdings by distance

13

You should be able to to sort your search results by the distance to the nearest available copy.

You should be able to sort the holdings on a record by distance. (You should also be able to hide unavailable copies, but this is a seperate development idea http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/2844)

Both of these would require that the user input their location. At the least, you should be able to provide a zip code. Optional geolocation might also be considered. Read more »

Editing patron type should not automatically renew the patron's account for two years.

24

Not sure what the logic of this feature is. There are many times when I edit patron info without wanting to renew the account.

Improve performance for batch importing records.

8

I would like to be able to load a larger number of records through staff client's batch importer. and also significantly increase the speed in which things load.   Central site staff are spending a lot of time loading records.

Hourly due dates should not exceed closed hours of library.

Hourly due dates ignore the library's closed hours and fall due after the library is closed as well as assess fines during the hours a library is closed.

Display "Current holds" information on Place Hold screen

Tags:

Right now in the catalog, the "Current holds" information (the "3 current holds with 16 total copies" line) I think only appears on the Item Details page.  However, at the Reference Desk when I'm helping a patron find a specific book (like Divergent, The Fault in our Stars, etc), nine times out of then I never go to that page. Add item barcode and other item specific numbers to keyword index

18

In order to streamline staff work flows, it would be very helpful to add item barcodes, item call numbers, and other item level identifiers to the keyword index. This would allow library staff to search for a record by these numbers without having to navigate to the number search tab.

Improve "limit to fiction" and "limit to nonfiction" options to the catalog.

29

"Limit to fiction" and "Limit to nonfiction" options would be a welcome addition to the catalog.

I've provided a mockup in which a select menu is present next to the "limit to available" option in the search results. The select options are "Show both fiction and nonfiction", "Limit to fiction", and "Limit to nonfiction". Read more »

Delivery time estimates based on past delivery times.

5

Patrons frequently ask when they can expect their holds to arrive. It would be wonderful if Evergreen could provide some assistance in answering this question.

If Evergreen were to record transit times and do a statistical analysis based on number of available copies, number of holds, destination library, owning library, open and closed dates, and other relevant factors then it could perhaps provide a useful estimate. Read more »

Provide staff with accurate answer to the questions "Is this holdable?" and "Does this circulate?"

16

Currently the only way most staff can know for sure whether an arbitrary item circulates is to try checking it out, and the only way to know for sure whether an item is holdable is to try placing a hold on it. This information should be available on the item status screen and should be an option in column pickers and as an optional column in the OPAC. Read more »
